Wil Wheaton is best known for portraying Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Gordie Lachance in Stand By Me, and a mean version of himself on The Big Bang Theory . On his new show, however, he plays himself.
Over the years, Wil has become an icon in the nerd world, and his new show is the best platform to show just that.
“I know that I’m a little bit of spokesman for those things, and I know that I have a little bit of a high profile in that world. And because I’m aware of that, I’m grateful for it. And it’s a privilege to have that voice, and it is important to me to respect it, not take it for granted. And every now and then when people want to hear me talk, it’s important that I have something to say.”
Wil Wheaton ‘s new show on the SyFy network, The Wil Wheaton Project, is just like The Soup , but the show is geared towards nerds and geeks. Wheaton is the host of the show and each week, he does a roundup of anything and everything related to the geek culture.
The Wil Wheaton Project was Wil’s own idea. He pitched it to the SyFy network , and they loved the idea. “They wanted the show to be a destination for geeks. They thought I was the right person to open that door,” Wheaton told Forbes.
In an interview with The Washington Post , Wil talked more about his show . He said that “being a nerd is not about being what you love, it’s about the way that you love it.” He stated that the show will highlight awesome things, but it will also be a place where absurdities will be teased.
Wil seemed to be excited about his new show, as it was evident on his Twitter account. He tweeted, “OH MY GOD MY SHOW IS ON MY SHOW IS ON MY SHOW IS ON! #WilWProject”
On Tuesday night, The Wil Wheaton Project aired its first episode. Wil opened the show by saying, “Nerds, we got a show!”
On the first episode, Wheaton talked about shows such as The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and the recently released X-Men: Days of Future Past. In addition, Wil also introduced a segment that he calls “Wil’s Memo,” wherein he talks about stuff that matter to him. For the first episode, he discussed new shows, pick-ups, and canceled shows.
Chris Hardwick, who has been friends with Wheaton for a long time, guested on the show and did the recap. Several topics were covered on the first episode including the Red Wedding and Neil deGrasse Tyson’s show.
The Wil Wheaton Project airs on Tuesdays on the SyFy network. It will have an initial run of 12 episodes.
