You’d be forgiven for assuming that Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio’s on-screen romance in Titanic must have had some real life counterpart, but you’d be wrong. In a recent interview, Winslet revealed that there was no fraternizing between the two stars of one of the biggest romance movies ever, and the reason why is surprising.
Every woman between the ages of 13 and 70 was all about Titanic when it hit theaters in 1997. The film eventually went on to gross more than $2 billion, and that’s back when money was green and worth something. Titanic currently sits in the No. 2 spot for highest grossing films of all time. Adjusted for inflation, it’s No. 4 all time, behind Gone with the Wind , Avatar , and Star Wars .
And with Hollywood being Hollywood, the inner 14-year-old girl in everyone assumed, dreamed, and doodled in its inner Trapper Keeper those fanciful thoughts of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet canoodling in real life after director/ king-of-the-world James Cameron yelled cut.
Not so, says Winslet in an interview with Marie Claire . Leo might have drawn her like one of his French girls – he didn’t, really, that was Cameron’s hand – but there was no draw between him and Winslet, apparently.
“I think the reason that [my friendship with Leo] works is because there was never any romantic thing,” Winslet told Marie Claire . “It’s so disappointing for people to hear that, because in the soap opera of the Kate and Leo Story we fell in love at first sight and had a million snogs, but actually we never did.”
Not even the one snog? No. Not even the one snog. Scenes like this were just Hollywood magic.
Why no snu snu between Leo and Kate?
“He always saw me as one of the boys,” Winslet continued, “I’ve never really been a girly-girl. We needed each other to lean on because we were very young and working all kinds of crazy bloody hours and it was a shock to the system.”
“One of the boys?” Okay. Winslet, who is now the face of Lancome Visionnaire Cx serum, says that she and Leo are still remarkably close friends. DiCaprio even walked Winslet down the aisle when the actress got married.
The two haven’t appeared on screen together since Revolutionary Road, but their friendship, forged in the process of making one of the highest grossing movies of all time, endures.
“I feel the same about her. It’s been fantastic, honestly,” Leo said of Winslet back in February , “having someone who is my age, and such a real woman. Her husband’s awesome, the kids are great, but I don’t get to see her as much as I wish.”
