The identity of who killed Joffrey is still a Game of Thrones mystery, but the creator of the wildly popular HBO drama has some insight into the real killer.

On Sunday’s episode of Game of Thrones , the vicious boy king was poisoned at his own wedding and killed. Though the internet was abuzz trying to find out who killed Joffrey, those who read the books that serve as the basis for the series may already know the answer.

Now, the author of the Game of Thrones series of novel, George R.R. Martin, is talking about Joffrey’s murder and how it plays into the series.

Though it’s not exactly a secret who killed Joffrey, Martin warned that there are still some twists and turns ahead.

[WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD]

He told Rolling Stone :

“[The] conclusion that the careful reader draws is that Joffrey was killed by the Queen of Thorns, using poison from Sansa’s hair net, so that if anyone actually did think it was poison, then Sansa would be blamed for it. Sansa had certainly good reason for it.”

Martin added that Joffrey’s murder brings up issues of redemption, and said his murder was “more like killing Hitler.” He also brought up the idea that the Queen of Thorns could be justified in killing Joffrey.

“Everything she’d heard about him, he was wildly unstable, and he was about to marry her beloved granddaughter,” Martin said. “The Queen of Thorns had studied Joffrey well enough that she knew that at some point he would get bored with Margaery, and Margaery would be maltreated, the same way that Sansa had been.”

How exactly was Joffrey killed? In case you didn’t catch it, one Reddit user posted this breakdown that shows exactly how the boy king was poisoned.

While the question of who killed Joffrey has already been answered, there are still plenty of Game of Thrones questions as the series moves forward. Martin revealed that there are still two more books to write, and “more surprises to come.”
