White House Welcomes Sunny, The Obamas’ New Water Dog

The White House welcomed Sunny, the Obamas’ new Portuguese Water Dog . The puppy was officially welcomed into the family on Monday, joining Bo, a male of the same breed.

Sunny’s arrival was announced by a blog post on the White House website, which added that the new pup was born in Michigan in June 2012.

The breed was chosen by the Obamas because at least one member of the family has allergies. As for the pup’s name? The First Family decided on Sunny because it apparently fits her cheerful personality.

The announcement of Sunny’s arrival included two pictures of her and Bo relaxing and playing on the White House’s South Lawn. A video was also included to show the two dogs are already becoming friends.

Bo was given to the Obamas as a gift from Senator Edward Kennedy in 2009, notes The Chicago Tribune. And since then, Bo has made a name for himself . He often accompanies the First Family on their official duties and has been seen inspecting the Holiday decorations.

The Portuguese Water Dog also greets guests on tours at the White House and to other public events. Like any true dog lovers, Bo was also present at Martha’s Vineyard where the Obamas enjoyed their annual summer vacation.

But from what First Lady Michelle Obama explained in October, Bo needs more doggie friends. Michelle hosted a “doggie play date” because “Bo doesn’t have enough dog interaction.” But considering Sunny is still a puppy by many standards (though she looks almost as big as Bo!), we’re guessing the new big brother may be pretty exhausted at the end of the day.

Sunny is expected to be seen playing with the Obamas, attending public events, and going for walks with the First Family after their dinner.

In honor of Sunny’s arrival at the White House, the Obamas will make a donation to the Washington Humane Society.
