The match starts at 7:30 p.m. local time (2 p.m. GMT) from Mohali.
For India, the match is a chance to continue the momentum from the last heart-stopping win over Bangladesh. Staring down almost certain defeat with Bangladesh needing only one run with three balls remaining, India summoned a performance for the ages in retiring Bangladesh’s final three batters.
As ICC Cricket noted, the win allows India to control its own fate against Australia.
“India will carry immense buoyancy from the manner in which it snatched victory out of the gaping jaws of defeat against Bangladesh. Inasmuch as India kept its nerve in a tense run chase, it will be mindful of the fact that it wasn’t a game it won as much as Bangladesh lost. Two boring singles away from elimination, it will be grateful for the lifeline thrown by the Bangladeshis. India will also be thankful for the fact that its fate now rests entirely in its own hands. The equation is fairly straightforward, even if the task isn’t – best Australia, and don’t worry about anything else.”
There was still quite a bit of tension after the win, with Indian captain MS Dhoni getting into a spat with a reporter who asked if his team was satisfied with the one-run victory.
“I know you aren’t happy that India won today,” Dhoni responded.
The reporter tried to clarify, but Dhoni cut him off, “Listen to me. Hearing you, your tone and your question, it’s clear that you aren’t happy that India has won. And when talking about a cricket match, there’s no script. It’s not about the script.” Dhoni continued, “You have to analyze that after losing the toss, what was the reason that we couldn’t make many runs on that wicket. If you aren’t analyzing these things sitting outside, then you shouldn’t ask this question.”
