In recent times, The Wall Street Journal has been consistently critical of President Trump, and its editorial board has often published articles that criticize his leadership and political decisions.
Now, amid the ongoing Iran war, Trump’s threats to leave the NATO alliance have again led to the editorial board of The Wall Street Journal fiercely criticizing the president. Leaving NATO would be an illegal move by the U.S., after Congress passed legislation to prevent precisely this.
Due to Trump’s decisions regarding the war and his repeated threats to take Greenland, America’s relationship with European nations has not been going well. Therefore, while Trump’s threats of leaving the NATO alliance did not come in a vacuum, European nations also have reason to be critical of him.

As The Wall Street Journal article mentions, “Spain and Italy are blocking U.S. military flights for Iran from their bases, and Mr. Trump says the Macron government has blocked flights over France. Add its reluctance to help clear the Strait of Hormuz, and Europe is playing into every MAGA stereotype about a one-sided Western alliance.”
It further added, “Europe’s frustration with Mr. Trump is understandable given his failure to consult about the war in advance and his taunts about occupying Greenland. Mr. Trump’s refusal to do more to help Ukraine resist Russia is another legitimate gripe.”
Throughout his second term, Trump has repeatedly said he would bring the Russia-Ukraine war to an end. At times, he even claimed that conditions were improving and the two countries would reach a deal soon. However, that has not materialized, as the war continues.
Instead of focusing on his promises regarding the Russia-Ukraine situation, Trump escalated conflict with Iran rather suddenly, and with the broader escalation that followed, European nations have expressed frustration with American leadership.
Regardless of the relationship between the U.S. and European nations, the article explained, “A U.S. withdrawal from NATO would nonetheless serve only Russia, Iran and China. Blowing up NATO has been the main goal of Russian strategy since the alliance formed in 1949. Mr. Putin would be emboldened — and at the very time Ukraine is showing new strength in resisting Russia’s invasion forces.”

The fact that Iran receives support from Russia makes the situation even more critical. As the article pointed out, the two countries share weapons such as drones and missiles, and Russia is reportedly informing Iran about American targets. Trump, however, seems reluctant to acknowledge the harm Russia is causing to U.S. troops, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has bypassed questions when asked about it.
The article further mentioned that foreign powers like China and Russia want “the U.S. and Israel to fail to defeat Iran, and Russia to defeat Ukraine militarily and become the dominant power in Europe. If the Western allies let this happen, it will be the height of folly and a historic tragedy.”
With Trump repeatedly claiming that a deal is on the way regarding the Iran war, and Iranian authorities denying it, the situation is growing more tense with each passing day. Trump had previously mentioned that the U.S. would withdraw from Iran soon regardless of a deal because of the damage America has inflicted on the country, saying it would prevent Iran from carrying out missile or other attacks on the U.S.
