In a recent article, Bloomberg reports that a search of Wal-Mart’s website revealed that five different types of semi-automatic guns are currently out of stock. The weapons are out of stock in 5 different states including Kansas, Alabama, and Pennsylvania.
On Monday, Wal-Mart announced that they would be removing advertisements for an assault rifle from the same maker as the Bushmaster AR-15. This move was in response to the tragedy that occurred in Newtown, Connecticut late last week, in which an AR-15 was used.
Walmart released a statement on Tuesday that they would not make any changes to the type of guns they offer in their stores. Consumers are unable to purchase guns on their website, but can check in-store availability using their zip code.
The news channel, WPTV , reports recent data involving gun manufacturers and retailers in the aftermath of the Newtown tragedy:
“In the wake of the shooting, both Republicans and Democrats have called for tighter gun control, sending gunmakers’ share prices into a tailspin on Wall Street. Shares of Smith & Wesson and Sturm, Ruger & Co. have tumbled over the last three trading days — 19% and 15% respectively. Firearm retailer Cabela’s has also fallen 15%.”
Alternately, Bloomberg reports sales of guns skyrocketing, as they have at Wal-Mart:
“The Hyatt Gun Shop in Charlotte, North Carolina racked up more than $1 million in sales yesterday for the best single-day performance since the store opened in 1959, according to Justin Anderson, director of online sales. At the top of shoppers’ lists was the Bushmaster AR-15, the model of rifle used at Newtown that sells for as much as $4,000 and had almost sold out, he said.”
