Some people are born with a sense of rhythm — others have it before then, like this baby. The ultrasound showed the baby clapping along while its parents sing “If You’re Happy and You Know It .” Luckily for Internet viewers, it was all caught on video.
Jen Cardinal posted the video to YouTube with the caption, “At our 14 week ultrasound our baby was clapping, so I sang a song with our doctor as my husband filmed. To use this video in a commercial player or in broadcasts.”
Of course, the viral video prompts an important question: is it a fake?
A spokesperson for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists told the news show Today , “Fetuses make all sorts of meaningless movements in utero without knowing that they are doing it, but if the clapping movement is real, it only happened once and they probably edited it to repeat.”
The doctor did manipulate the footage so that the baby’s clapping would be extended. Despite this, they insist that the first three claps were very real.
Inside Edition also asked the mother if the baby video is real.
She said, “It is, and it isn’t.”
“We went in for an ultrasound and the baby clapped three times on screen. Not to the music, just clapped three times. So my doctor, he said, ‘Well, let’s sing a song.’ My husband grabbed his video and the doctor reran the ultrasound and played the claps and I sang and he sang with me ‘If you’re happy and you know it.’”
In other words, the video is a remix.
Nevertheless, the baby’s clapping in the ultrasound lines up pretty well to the song. Maybe the baby is cut out for a career in music, after all.
