Two people are facing a slew of criminal charges for allegedly dragging an Anne Arundel County sheriff’s deputy with a vehicle, according to ABC 2 News . At around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Officer Warren Porter recognized Melissa Andrea Day, 46, of Severna Park, Maryland, as a person wanted for multiple outstanding warrants for failure to appear in court and violating parole and probation.
It was reported that Porter spotted Day sitting in the passenger seat of a parked vehicle on Magothy Bridge Road in Pasadena. When he approached the vehicle, he placed the suspect under arrest.
Porter was able to handcuff one of the suspect’s hands, but as he was attempting to handcuff Day’s other hand, the driver of the vehicle — identified as 41-year-old David Gale Waid, of Stoney Beach — pressed on the accelerator and drove off, dragging the officer for at least 100 feet before stopping the vehicle and taking off on foot.
When emergency medical services arrived at the scene, the officer was rushed to Shock Trauma at the University of Maryland Medical Center, where he was treated for injuries sustained to his head and body. Porter has since been released and he is expected to be okay.
Anne Arundel County Sheriff Ron Bateman stated that Porter was extremely scared during the ordeal as he believed that he was going to be run over by the vehicle.
“Eventually, he was able to get free, and he rolled toward the right shoulder; when he did, he said he watched the car’s back tire nearly miss his head, and he continued to roll and actually slammed into a telephone pole,” Bateman said.
He went on to say that Porter is extremely lucky as he only suffered road rash and stitches after the incident.
Police officials say that they searched the area for the suspects but neither of them was found. Several days after the officer was dragged, it was reported that police received an anonymous tip that Day and Waid were hiding in a house in Glen Burnie.
The suspects were arrested on Monday without incident, WBALTV reports.
Waid was charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault on a law enforcement officer, and harboring a fugitive.
Day is facing charges of attempted manslaughter with a vehicle, assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, and conspiracy to commit an assault.
