‘True New Yorkers Are Mets Fans’ Says Curtis Granderson

“True New Yorkers are Mets fans,” is a comment that is sure to get newly signed New York Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson into a lot of trouble. It may not have been such a big deal if Granderson’s last team wasn’t the New York Yankees .

Granderson made the comment in his press conference on Tuesday as he was introduced to the media. The whole quote was not as dangerous as the “True New Yorkers” firestorm that was set off. Granderson said in the press conference, “a lot of people I’ve met in New York have said, ‘true New Yorkers are Mets fans.’”

The Subway series between the Bronx Yankees and Queens Mets starts May 12, 2014 at Yankee Stadium. Expect lots of “colorful” signs to be on display to show Granderson what Yankees fans think about ‘true New Yorkers.’

Granderson was signed to a four year $60 million contract on December 9, 2013. Granderson, who turns 33 in March, hit.229 with seven homers and 15 RBIs this year for the Yankees, when wrist and hand injuries limited him to 61 games. He surpassed 40 homers in each of his previous two seasons in pinstripes. The move is being met with mixed reactions. It is the most expensive contract since Sandy Alderson took over as general manager of the Mets.

Twitter reacts:

@cgrand14 I’ve heard that true New Yorkers think the Mets are like and play like a minor league team.
