Tiger Woods Wins 75th PGA Tour Event, Dominating Torrey Pines

Tiger Woods wins his 75th PGA Tour Event, cruising through one of his favorite courses to an easy victory.

On Monday Woods closed with an even-par 72 round for a four-shot victory in the Farmers Insurance Open. The event took place at Torrey Pines, making this Woods’ seventh win at the Farmers and his eighth overall at Torrey Pines, including the 2008 U.S. Open.

As Tiger Woods wins his 75th event, he does so in throwback dominant form. Woods led by as many as eight shots on the back nine, though a slow finish in a fog-hampered event allowed that lead to be cut in half, the New York Daily News noted.

“I’m excited the way I played all week,” Woods said. “I hit the ball well — pretty much did everything well and built myself a nice little cushion. I had some mistakes at the end, but all my good play before that allowed me to afford those mistakes.”

His dominance was clear throughout the tournament.

“I don’t know if anybody would have beaten him this week,” said Nick Watney, who was able to pull within five shots of Woods before falling back. “He’s definitely on his game.”

For Woods, the 75th tour victor is a good bounceback after missing the cut at Abu Dhabi last week, ESPN noted.

“I think he wanted to send a message,” said Hunter Mahan, who shares a swing coach with Woods. “I think deep down he did. You play some games to try to motivate yourself. There’s been so much talk about Rory (McIlroy). Rory is now with Nike. That would be my guess.”

As Tiger Woods wins his 75th PGA event, his now sits seven wins behind the record held by Sam Snead.
