The Walking Dead Season 4 will feature actor Michale Cudlitz as Sgt. Abraham Ford in a new regular role on the zombie apocalypse series.

Cudlitz won the Critic’s Choice Award for best support actor in a drama series for his portrayal of police officer John Cooper in Southland . The Cudlitz announcement was made today at the New York Comic-Con. Among his other credits, Cudlitz also appeared in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers .

Also joining the cast is Josh McDermitt, who will play Ford’s traveling companion Eugene Porter. Both of these characters are taken from Robert Kirkman’s Walking Dead graphic novels, which spawned the hit AMC TV series which for the new season premieres tomorrow night at 9 pm Eastern.

New showrunner Scott Gimple told The Hollywood Reporter that there will be both similarities and variances from the comic book in what you see on the screen as the new characters are incorporated into the action. “We’re going to tell a version of the Eugene, Abraham and Rosita comic stories, that’s what we do. I love those characters from the book, they are very different flavors of comic book characters than we’ve seen on the show.”

Rosita is another new recurring character played by Christian Serratos.

Added Gimple: “We’re going to get to those characters in a bit but before that, we’re going to be exploring a lot of different locations. We’re at the prison the first two episodes. We start looking at other places in episode three on but that isn’t even tied with them yet.”

Walking Dead star Norman Reedus (fan favorite Daryl) previously explained that additional cast members take some getting used to (both on and off screen). Plus, the expanded group dynamic also means more opportunity for human-on-human treachery in the show along with the ever-present threats from the walkers themselves,
