The Legend of Zelda for Wii U is looking impressive, even if it’s not going for realism. Of course, Nintendo never did try to make their games realistic, always opting for the kid-friendly look we know them for.
This time though, Zelda Wii U could be getting something we haven’t seen since Capcom’s turn at producing the series. The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures on GameCube was the first time we ever saw a multiplayer mode in Nintendo’s flagship action RPG series, and all four players controlled a palette swap of Link.
This is the same thing the upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Unity is doing, and the reason Ubisoft claims they can’t add female assassins in multiplayer.

The rumors of The Legend of Zelda for Wii U adding multiplayer were hinted at when Zelda developer Eiji Aonuma was promoting the game and made a statement steeped in mystery. He said that Zelda Wii U would be “more than just a single-player experience.”
This could mean anything, but the implications could be exciting to Wii U owners who still crave the next killer IP after Mario Kart 8 .
Considering what the Zelda Wii U gameplay trailers from E3 showed us, there is definite potential for a multiplayer experience as Link and other characters can be used to defend Hyrule while enemies swarm around our heroes. Aonuma told us that they were going for a much more open-world environment with this game, so it very well could be designed to accommodate at least two players.
Could there be a new level of tactics and sharing among gamers that Nintendo has never done before?
It looks like Nintendo is really changing things and could put the Wii U back in the running like Mario Kart 8 did in May, with sales records showing it trailing just behind the Xbox One.
We will know in time what Aonuma meant by his promotional statement for The Legend of Zelda Wii U. For now speculation is definitely pointing to a multiplayer Zelda Wii U.
