What if your efficiency apartment could triple in size with a simple hand gesture? Now it can, thanks to the minds at Kent Larson’s Changing Places Research Group.

The high-tech home is a concept that features a small 200 square foot efficiency apartment. However, unlike normal efficiency rooms, this apartment is loaded with hidden features that can be unlocked with a simple hand gesture or voice command. MIT Media lab posted a video of the CityHome in action. The media lab notes that the home is efficient and customizable.

“The CityHome is an ultra-efficient, responsive urban home, providing a hardware and software ecosystem for personal space customization.”

In the video , you can see that the same 200 square feet of space can be used for many different purposes depending on which “customization” you activate. Sections that electronically pull out into the space range from a bed to extra living room seating. A full-sized kitchen table can be brought into the space on command when a home owner has company. The space can then easily be transformed back into a living area or used for extended counter space for preparing meals.

Maximizing space isn’t the only customization that can be made through special “home apps” or voice commands. Home owners can adjust lighting and privacy shades utilizing the same gesture-based apps as the rest of the home.

What do you think of the space saving design? Would you like to have some of these features in your current home or apartment to maximize your space?
