The Tappan Zee bridge was the venue for a serious accident involving a multi car pile-up which killed a woman and injured four others.
At around 9 pm, the New York State police received a call from dispatch that there was a vehicle driving southbound in a northbound lane on the I-87.
The car was a white SUV being driven by Michael Schechel, aged 69, in Thiells, New York. The SUV had a head-on collision with a Nissan driven by Newman Ayeh-Brachie, also from New York. The force of the impact caused the Nissan to roll a number of times and end up on its roof.
A third car driven by Juan Robles, aged 34, was also northbound when it swerved and missed the SUV coming towards it.
The woman who lost her life in the tragic Tappan Zee accident was the passenger in the Nissan which rolled on its roof. Hannah Ayeh-Brachie, aged 56, died at the scene of the crash from her wounds.
At least five vehicles were involved in the pile-up, with the other injured drivers being taken to Nyack Hospital, reportedly in critical condition.
The northbound lanes on Tappan Zee were closed to traffic by State police for around six hours as they carried out an accident reconstruction and began investigations into the circumstances which led to the fatal Tappan Zee Accident.
It is unclear at this time exactly what led the driver of the white SUV, Michael Schechel, to be driving on the wrong side of the road, against oncoming traffic. It is also not confirmed yet whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
