Richard Gere is still reportedly embroiled in a $126 million divorce battle with his estranged wife, Carey Lowell.
The duo recently resolved the custody battle over their 15-year-old son, Homer James Jigme Gere, who is named after both of the actors’ parents. This has now paved the way for the duo to progress their court discussions over the separation settlement, and how they will divide their vast fortune.
The New York Post have reported that both Lowell and Gere appeared to be getting along in the moments leading up to the proceedings, which were conducted behind closed-doors.
In fact, the pair were seen to share a friendly talk before they then sat down to read separate copies of the New York Times . They were then ushered into the conference room, where their lawyers will have begun to decipher and negotiate the details of their settlement. It’s believed that the pair and their attorneys met for 30 minutes. Gere is being represented by Aronson Mayefsky & Sloan, one of the most prominent law firms in New York City.
According to Page Six’s source, 54-year-old Lowell and 65-year-old Gere split due to their different personalities. According to the insider, Gere, a practicing Buddhist who frequently meditates and spends time with the Dalai Lama, craved privacy, while “Lowell likes socializing with other bigwigs.”
The relaxed Gere was a far cry from the individual who appeared at the divorce court in October, 2014. After Lowell, who previously starred as the Bond girl in 1989’s License To Kill , and Gere had held talks in a Manhattan courthouse, the Pretty Woman actor barged past photographers, and even “wielded [his] pointy black umbrella like a sword .”
However, on Friday, Gere was so relaxed that he was even spotted flirting with a reporter in an elevator at Manhattan Supreme Court. Gere reportedly joked to the woman, “You want me to give you a special, intimate interview?” She wasn’t able to respond, though, because Gere’s lawyer quickly interjected with, “No comment.”
Richard Gere and Casey Lowell were married for 12 years. This will be Gere’s second divorce, as he was previously married to supermodel Cindy Crawford between 1991 and 1995.
