Remember when the Commodore 64 and Amiga systems came out, getting people to ditch those systems for better computers was a real pain in the butt, half the nation just wanted to leave good enough alone. Today it’s very different, people are willing to dispose of their PCs and head to Tablets in huge numbers, at least that’s what a new study is stating.
Thanks to the success of the Apple iPad it’s believed that the onslaught of tablet devices will lead to a computer revolution, much like the laptop did for the computer industry years early and on a smaller level what the netbook has done for the portable electronics industry.
Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps said at the Untethered Conference on Thursday that sales wise tablets will see a huge upward swing, with this year closing at three and a half million units sold and 2015 closing closer to 20.4 million units.
In comparison the PC is expected to sell 18.7 million units in 2010 and then drop to 15.7 million units in 2015. The chart shown above shows how Tablet PCs could actually conquer the PC market by 2012, overtaking netbooks with an 18% to 17% market take. While 2013 will see a 21% versus 17% market share, with desktops sitting at just 20% of the overall market.
Fear not laptop users, sales are only expected to fall from 45% of the market in 2010 to 42% in 2015.
