A suicide attacker set off a car bomb in northeastern Syria on Sunday, killing four people and wounding many more. The suicide bomber targeted an area that houses security offices.
Syrian’s state media, along with the country’s official news agency, also stated that scores of people were wounded in the attack in Qamishli, a town about 435 miles away from Damascus, reports Yahoo! News .
While the state media stated that four people are dead, activists stated that eight people were killed and 15 seriously wounded. They also expect that the death toll will rise.
The explosion came just hours after activists reported that fighting between Syrian rebels and government officials took the lives of at least five people in Aleppo. Several homes were also decimated in the violence.
Aleppo is the country’s commercial capital, and also its largest city. it is home to about three million people and was also once housed a large amount of people who were supportive of President Bashar al-Assad. But the city has since been hit with fierce fighting after rebel troops launched an offensive in July.
Sunday’s car bombing in Syria highlights the bloody conflict in the region that erupted 18 months ago, gradually morphing into a civil war that has killed more than 30,000 people, according to activists. Boston.com notes that the war has also decimated entire neighborhoods in the country’s main cities, like Aleppo and Damascus.
Turkey and Egypt have sent warnings to the Assad regime and its allies, with Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi stating that “we will be on the side of the Syrian people until the bloodshed ends, the cruel regime is gone and Syrian people reach their just rights.”
Turkey is housing tens of thousands of Syrian refugees, while Turkish soil has served as a logistical center for rebel fighters like the Free Syrian Army.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Sunday’s car bomb, which killed at least four people.
