SUV Gets Stuck On Border Fence During Botched Smuggling Attempt

Two men got their SUV stuck on a border fence today as they tried to enter the United States illegally from Mexico.

According to the Yuma Sun , the two men used a make-shift ramp in order to drive their SUV to the top of 14-foot tall border fence at the border of the United States and Mexico. The SUV got stuck on the fence, however, and the two men were forced to flee the scene.

Border Patrol agents found the two men and the stranded SUV at about midnight last night about 20 miles west of Yuma. The smugglers were able to escape back into Mexico. The agents didn’t find any contraband in the car, but Border Patrol Agent Spencer Tippets said that he believed that the two men had been trying to smuggle drugs into the country.

Tippets said:

“We are assuming that (they had drugs.) The back of the vehicle was opened, so it appears that they took all that out before the agents arrived. When smuggling organizations make an attempt like this, it helps us to realize how successful we really are here in the Yuma Sector. Before they didn’t have to use drastic measures. But now that the border has essentially been shut down in this area, they are left with only drastic measures — things that they wouldn’t normally ever even consider.”

Surprisingly, this isn’t the first time that drug smugglers have tried to use a ramp to scale the border fence. The Yuma Sun reports that a half million dollars worth of Marijuana was seized in April after smugglers scaled the border fence with a ramp.

Tippets said:

“It was kind of a similar attempt. In that instance they were successful in getting the vehicle over, but agents found them and seized the vehicle.”

Of course, driving an SUV isn’t the only way to smuggle drugs into the United States. Smugglers have also used catapults and submarines .
