Susan Sarandon’s son, Miles, is making celebrity headline news for being partial to wearing dresses. ABC News reports that the Oscar Award-winning actress is proud of her son for his ability to openly be himself. Sarandon is an LGBT advocate, so she’s incredibly impressed that her son embraces his identity.

The 68-year-old actress says that Miles, 23, likes “colors outside the lines” of gender roles. She recently spoke with TrevorLIVE of The Trevor Project , an event that supports LGBT youth.

“My son Miles is a musician and a DJ and sometimes when his band performs they all wear dresses, and he has long hair.”

Miles father is Sarandon’s famous ex, Tim Robbins. They have another son together — Jack Henry. Sarandon said she moved to New York City with the intent on exposing her children to a broad range of different people and families. The actress also has a daughter — Eva Amurri — whose father is Italian director, Franco Amurri.

“I wanted to raise my kids in New York because, as a privileged kid, I think you can become very isolated and at least if you’re privileged, you should understand you’re privileged, and not take it for granted,” Sarandon said.

The Trevor Project provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention to LGBT youth. Sarandon talked to People about the difficulties she knows youth face with gender identity and how society can impact that.

“As a mother, I know how difficult it is to survive the teenage years intact and the socialization process — if you step out of line, it’s so difficult. And there are so many kids these days who are questioning, gay or transgender, who have a very tough time and it could be very dangerous for them.I think it’s really great that we are having all these conversations and getting kids to understand that there is somewhere we can go to talk it over.”

Prior to Susan Sarandon sharing that her son wears dresses at times, she recently told Oprah Winfrey how happy she is by the “fluidity of gender that’s happening” now.

Sarandon admires those who come out publicly and is reportedly excited about Caitlyn Jenner. A lot of other celebrities raved about Caitlyn’s transition and hope it encourages others to see that it’s okay to identify with the opposite gender.

“I’m really happy that she was authentic and that she came forward and that her family has supported her and asked questions. [But] I think it’s important to remember that there are a lot of transitioning people who do not have the means that she has, and do not have the attention, and are maybe not in a culture that is as embracing as the one that she’s found herself in.”
