A sequel to the 2001 comedy Super Troopers has been confirmed, and Broken Lizard member Steve Lemme has revealed that filming will begin early in 2015.

In an interview with Us Weekly , Lemme revealed that the sequel will indeed be made, with funding almost fully secured. Lemme, who starred in the original Super Troopers along with the rest of the Broken Lizard comedy group, revealed that legal issues and negotiations for terms have been the main reasons that fans have had to wait nearly 15 years for a sequel.

“The fans have been asking for it for a while, but we were finally able to package everything together. Fox is going to distribute the film, but we needed to raise the money for it, with a minimum budget of $27 million, which we’ve just about raised. There may be a Kickstarter launched to raise the last little bit.”

While Lemme didn’t reveal any of the plot details for Super Troopers 2 , he did admit that the film will pick up a few years after the original, calling the story unique and original.

“The biggest difficulty was trying to top that opening scene, which so many people have complimented us on,” he said. “I think we’ve done it.”

Fans have speculated about a Super Troopers sequel for years, while over the last few months, several of the cast members have opened up about the project, as The Inquisitr noted. In April, Lemme revealed on the Chewin’ It with Kevin and Steve podcast that a script for the sequel had been completed, leaving funding as the last hurdle for production. Jay Chandrasekhar, who is also a member of Broken Lizard and director of Super Troopers , told The Nerdist that the sequel would be very similar in style to the original film.

Lemme also revealed that when the cast returns to their roles for Super Troopers 2 , their trademark ‘staches will be gracing the screen once more as well.

“Everybody who had a mustache in the first one will grow it back,” he said. “Now the guys who didn’t grow mustaches for the first one want to have a mustache. We’re making them earn it, not sure how we’ll haze them, but they better be prepared.”

The group plans to begin filming the movie in early 2015, while pre-production work for the Super Troopers sequel will start in November.
