Suge Knight Trial Delayed As Wrongful Death Suit Moves Forward

Marion “Suge” Knight will have to wait a bit longer for one of his days in court. Billboard reports that a Los Angeles Superior Court judge delayed a hearing in Suge Knight’s robbery case until October 13, at the request of Knight’s defense team. Prosecutors planned to detail evidence against Suge Knight. The case stems from an incident in September, 2014, in which Knight and comedian Katt Williams allegedly stole a camera from a celebrity photographer. Both Knight and Williams pleaded not guilty.

Knight remains in custody after failing to post bail for other, unrelated charges. In January, 2015, Knight ran over Terry Carter and Cle “Bone” Sloan. TMZ reported that Knight was ejected from a set for the N.W.A biopic, Straight Outta Compton. According to Knight, he went to the set to make peace with Dr. Dre. After he was ejected from the set, Knight went to Tam’s Burgers, where another scene was due to film. Surveillance footage shows Knight arrive in a red pick up truck. Sloan appears to approach Knight and the cab of Knight’s pickup truck rocks back and forth. Seconds later, Knight ran over Sloan as he backed up his truck. Knight accelerated and stuck Terry Carter. Knight claimed that Sloan and Carter were armed.

Carter died from his injuries. Knight was arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder, and hit-and-run. Surveillance footage from a nearby restaurant appears to show Knight running over Carter and Sloan. Knight and his defense team claim that Carter and Sloan were armed, and say that Knight feared for his life. Bail for Knight was initially set at $25 million, but lowered to $10 million. Knight’s attorney indicated that Knight would post bail soon, but several months have passed and Knight remains in prison.

Knight is a former rap mogul, but allegations of violent behavior and the death of rapper Tupac Shakur all but destroyed Death Row Records, the label Knight founded with Dr. Dre. Knight sold the label in 2009. That means that despite once being the most feared hip-hop executive in the business, Knight probably doesn’t have the money to post his own bond. There were rumors that Floyd Mayweather or Chris Brown might come forward and post Knight’s bond, but so far, nobody has. Chris Brown hasn’t commented, and distanced himself from Knight after an incident in August, 2014, in which Knight was shot six times.

Knight’s money troubles can only get worse. According to the Los Angeles Daily News, a judge ruled early last week that Terry Carter’s widow can move forward with her wrongful death lawsuit against Knight while his criminal trial is ongoing. Carter’s lawsuit also names Dr. Dre and Ice Cube as defendants.
