A submarine wreck has been found at the bottom of the Baltic Sea by the Swedish military.
According to the AFP , the soviet submarine sunk in the Baltic during World War II. Sweden’s military said in a statement today that the submarine wreck was found off the coast of Oeland in the Baltic Sea. The military believes that the submarine is the S-6 which disappeared in September 1941.
Sweden’s military said in a statement:
“In the autumn of 1941 several Russian submarines left their home bases to patrol the Baltic Sea. Several of them never returned. One of them has now been found, blown up into large pieces, southeast of Oeland.”
The military believes that the S-6 was blown apart by a German mine.
The statement reads:
“There is much to indicate that the submarine headed straight into the minefield while on the surface and was blown apart by a mine.”
Stuff Magazine reports that the submarine wreck was initially found by civilian divers. The divers reported the find and this week the military confirmed that a lost World War II sub was sitting at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. The Swedish submarine salvage ship HMS Belos was also able to capture video of the submarine.
According to the AFP, this is the second sub wreck found in Swedish waters recently. In 2009, divers found the S-2, another Soviet sub that was blown up by German mines.
