The Apple iPhone 5 lacks NFC technology and other popular smartphone features found on devices from Samsung, LG, Motorola, and others. It is no secret that the tech giant has had a hard time jumping ahead of its mobile competitors in terms of major mobile advancements. Now Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is admitting that Apple is “somewhat behind” in terms of cutting edge mobile technology.

During Businessweek ‘s Best Brand Awards, Wozniak said of his company’s followers:

“I am proud that we have such loyal fans.”

Apple’s co-founder admits:

“But this loyalty is not given, the need to have the best products is always there. Currently we are in my opinion somewhat behind with features in the smartphone business. Others have caught up. Samsung is a big competitor. But precisely because they are currently making great products.”

While Steve Wozniak has always stood beside his company’s products, he hasn’t shied away from carrying around Google Android-based smartphones and tablets. Even as Wozniak waits hours in line for Apple products, just like a regular fan of Apple products, he also understands that better tech is available at his disposal.

Apple has come under fire for spending more time and money on legal battles over patents than it does on research and development. In the meantime, Samsung, LG, and other competitors have continued to focus on new forms of technology that users have quickly began to adopt.

Do you think Apple iPhone devices have fallen behind in terms of adapting to new forms of mobile technology?
