Star Wars fans excited for the upcoming release of Aftermath , penned by author Chuck Wendig, will have much more to look forward to in the coming months, as Del Rey announced that the book is set to be the first in a trilogy exploring the time period between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens .

The announcement came as part of Wendig’s appearance at Comic-Con, according to Entertainment Weekly , though few details were released about the future scope of the project. Del Rey, the publisher behind Star Wars: Aftermath , revealed that two more novels will follow the first book, and that Wendig will return to pen both. The titles of the next two volumes and plot details have not been released, however.

Aftermath is set to pick up directly after the conclusion of the original Star Wars trilogy, following the death of the Emperor and Darth Vader above Endor. Though the Empire has been dealt a massive blow by the Rebel Alliance, the war between the two sides is hardly concluded, and Aftermath will examine the story of the Empire regrouping and attempting to strike at the fledgling New Republic.

Earlier this week, plot summaries for a number of new Star Wars publications , including Aftermath , were released. As Comicbook.com notes, the titles are collectively known as Journey To Star Wars: The Force Awakens , forming a multi-publisher initiative that will lead up to the release of the next film in December. The plot summary for Aftermath reveals that it will take place near the planet of Akiva, where Imperial forces are gathering, and that the novel will involve a familiar face from the Star Wars universe.

“Out on a lone reconnaissance mission, pilot Wedge Antilles watches Imperial Star Destroyers gather like birds of prey circling for a kill, but is taken captive before he can report back to the New Republic leaders.

Meanwhile, on the planet’s surface, former Rebel fighter Norra Wexley has returned to her native world — war weary, ready to reunite with her estranged son, and eager to build a new life in some distant place. But when Norra intercepts Wedge Antilles’s urgent distress call, she realizes her time as a freedom fighter is not yet over. What she doesn’t know is just how close the enemy is—or how decisive and dangerous her new mission will be.”

Though it remains unclear when fans should expect the second and third volumes in Wendig’s trilogy, they can now look forward to a much longer story bridging the gap between the original and sequel Star Wars trilogies. As the Inquisitr has previously reported, Star Wars: Aftermath will be released on September 4, giving fans their first hint of the galaxy in the wake of Endor.
