Solar Impulse and Captain Piccard Complete First Solar-Powered International Flight

Solar-Powered plane Solar Impulse and it’s Captains Bertrand Piccard and Andrew Borschberg are one step closer to their goal of circumnavigating the globe having completed their first ever International flight.

The plane and it’s two man crew took off from Berne, Switzerland and landed in Brussels, Belgium in just under 13 hours, nearly half the time of an earlier test flight.

The plane contains a 200-foot wingspan that is covered in 12,000 photovoltaic solar cells and it apparently has a smooth landing as showin in the video below.

While the plane certainly shows promise it’s still far from a consumer viable option for navigating commercially flown skies.
