When news broke that Charles Manson was to marry 26-year-old Afton Elaine Burton, the internet basically exploded in a frenzy. How can a seemingly “normal” attractive woman want to marry one of the most infamous murderers?
As the internet reacted so did Debra Tate, the sister of the late Sharon Tate who was brutally murdered in 1969 by Manson while she was eight months pregnant.
According to the Associated Press , Debra Tate has dedicated her life to making sure Manson, now 80, is behind bars, and his cult-like following doesn’t exist exist like it did when her sister Sharon was murdered.
Although Debra says this new development is “ludicrous” and “insane,” she admits that she’s not surprised by the news of Manson’s upcoming marriage.

As for Manson’s fiancee, Afton Elaine Burton, who believes Manson is innocent, Tate said that Burton is just under one of Manson’s spells. The young woman believes that Charles Manson is leading some kind of movement to save the environment.
As the Inquisitr reported, Burton put out a statement on her Facebook page, claiming Manson’s innocence.
“Charles Manson is not a murderer and has NEVER killed anyone, nor did he ever ‘order’ any crimes to be committed on his behalf; it’s a lie. He has been a victim of lies and sensationalism, from the government and the media for over 40 years… Charles Manson has been a naturalist and eco-warrior for many years. He was arrested in 1969 for setting two earthmover machines, which were being used to tear up the deserts of Death Valley, on fire; NOT murder.”

Although it’s easy to see how this story could be disturbing to Sharon Tate’s sister, Debra wonders if there’s something deeper that the media doesn’t know about Afton Elaine Burton.
“I wonder how long it will take for her to figure out this is just a con. It makes me wonder what is missing in her life that she would want to marry an 80-year-old man. Is she a victim? Is she mentally deranged?”
After Sharon’s death, her surviving family members made sure to attend every parole hearing, ensuring Manson was never granted parole. According to BBC , Manson was denied parole in 2012 and isn’t allowed to apply for parole until 2027, which means Manson is likely to perish in prison.
Still, Debra Tate will continue to disband the fandom her sister’s killer has developed over the years. “I don’t want any more heinous actions by another family like his because of something I didn’t do.”
