Shania Twain recently opened up about the wife swap that changed her life forever. According to Fox News , the country/pop singer said that she thought that her career was over when her former husband, Robert “Mutt” Lange ran off with her best friend , Marie-Anne Thiébaud.
“When that happened, I thought, ‘Forget it, this is more than I can handle — I’m never going to sing again.’ I had to grieve through it,” Shania said.
As most people know, Shania got very close to Marie-Anne’s husband, Frédéric Thiébaud, and the two got married — hence the whole “wife swap” thing.
Shania Twain lost a lot in the wife swap. Not only did she divorce her husband, but she also lost her best friend, whom she says she never talks to (Shania has kept things “cordial” with Mutt for the sake of the couple’s son, Eja, 13). According to the New York Post , Twain chose to leave her friendship with Marie-Anne in the past .
“I don’t see her, ever. I don’t invite that trigger into my life… She’s not my future — she’s my past.”
This candid interview about her life comes as Shania gets ready to say goodbye to performing.
While she wasn’t always at the top of the charts with new music, Shania has made several comebacks and has been wildly successful over the years, winning five Grammys from 1995 through 2004. She took a break from music for the following eight years due to dysphonia.
“It’s hard to explain. When you have an impairment in the voice-box area, it affects you psychologically — you get gun-shy: ‘Can I go for that note, that sound?’ It’s a vicious cycle,” she said.
But in 2012, she made her way back — and in a big way. She landed a residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, where she performed 105 shows over two years. She has since decided that she no longer wants to perform, so she’s on the road one last time (her last tour was in 2003-2004).
“It took so much effort to get back onstage again, and I thought, ‘I’d rather end at the top, in that room, in that town. I thought if I managed that, it was time to say goodbye — not to music, but to stage performing. I’m going to visit the fans, instead of having them visit me. It’s going to be completely different from Las Vegas.”
As previously reported by the Inquisitr , Shania has stressed that she is not retiring from music … just from performing.
“I’m not retiring by any means. I’ve got so much to do musically,” she said recently.
Her farewell tour, Rock This Country, will run through the end of August.
