Shailene Woodley Breaks Silence On Being Cut From ‘Spider-Man’

When it was announced that Shailene Woodley would no longer take the pivotal role of Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 , it was a bit of a shock. At that point Woodley had shot four scenes for the film when director Marc Webb decided to cut her out of the film.

Now Woodley has revealed to Movies.com just why she was cut as Mary Jane Watson, and it sounds similar to the news we’ve been hearing from Sony.

Woodley , who is about to hit it big in The Divergent series, said of her stepping down from the role: “Mary Jane was in four scenes – four scenes in the whole film, and it didn’t make sense.”

Speaking about the bloated plot problems that might have occurred if Mary Jane Watson was included in the sequel, Woodley said:

“They’re introducing so many new characters; it really didn’t make sense to introduce such a vital character to the comic books in a movie that had so much else going on, so they’re holding off for future films.”

So for now Mary Jane Watson will have to wait until the third film to make her debut in the Spider-Man series. However, Woodley still won’t be returning to the series. Our guess is because she’ll be invested in The Divergent series, but we also figure that Marvel realized she looked way too young against Andrew Garfield to play his main squeeze in films to come.

When asked if she would be availble Woodley explained that we shouldn’t hold our breath:

“Well, it wouldn’t make sense, there’s no screenplay for it, by the time they shoot it it’ll be so many years from now, but it’s not a bad thing, [people look at it] like a negative thing, but it wasn’t and I think it was a very smart move on Sony’s behalf.”

Looks like there’s no hard feelings.
