The Seattle Seahawks could possibly lose starting cornerbacks Richard Sherman and Brandon Browner for four games following violations of the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy.
Both men tested positive for PEDs and both tests are currently being appealed. Insiders expect both appeals to be heard early this week.
The Seattle Seahawks (6-5) are still in the hunt for a playoff spot after losing to the Miami Dolphins 24-21 on Sunday. Losing both Sherman and Browner would be a huge blow for the NFC wild-card contenders.
If league officials uphold the ruling, Sherman would be replaced by veteran Marcus Trufant at left cornerback, and Browner would be replaced by Walter Thurmond at right cornerback.
Both Browner and Thurmond are under six feet tall and will be matched up against six foot four wideout Brandon Marshall next Sunday when they take on the Chicago Bears.
Sherman currently leads the Seattle Seahawks with four interceptions, while Browner is close behind with three interceptions of his own alongside two forced fumbles.
Even with Richard Sherman and Brandon Browners on its side, the Seattle offense has struggled this season, ranked 26th in yards per game and 24th in points per game. Given its reliance on defense, the Seattle Seahawks would likely fail to reach the playoff if two star members of its defense were left off the roster.
Even if Sherman and Browner win their appeals, the distraction caused by their performance enhancing drugs scandal could ultimately be enough to keep the Seahawks away from a playoff spot.
