Seats became loose on an American Airlines flight over the weekend, alarming passengers and prompting questions about cuts airlines have been making to maintenance crews in an effort to boost profits, which some suggest are at the expense of passenger safety.

The seats came loose on an American flight from Boston to Miami, prompting an emergency stop when the situation came to light. The Boeing 757 American Airlines Flight 6885,was diverted after takeoff from Boston to New York City’s John F. Kennedy Airport where passengers were delayed three hours as they were moved to another flight after the seats came loose during the initial leg of the voyage.

After the seats came loose but prior to the JFK landing, passengers were moved to other seats on American Airlines Flight 6885 without incident. No injuries were reported after the seats came loose on the flight.

Equipment woes in American Airlines’ fleet are not the only problem with which the struggling airline has had to contend in recent months; according to ABC News , American has also been dealing with a large number of later than expected flights and delays during their service.

The news site explains that a statement made last month indicates the airline admitted difficulties with planes have prompted many of the delays, and the statement read in part:

“The recent disruptions are primarily due to the significant increase in maintenance write-ups by our pilots, many right at the time of departure.”

ABC also quotes industry expert and Wall Street Journal travel editor Scott McCartney, who has gone so far as to suggest passengers avoid American Airlines altogether while the problems persist:

“My advice is, until things get straightened out with the operations, if you have a choice, you ought to book another airline … It’s just not worth it.”

Would you be surprised if the seats came loose on a flight, or have your basic expectations deteriorated for flying?
