The Season 4 finale of Scandal featured quite the roller coaster ride for Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young). From celebrating the victory of her senatorial race to being tossed out the White House by President Fitz (Tony Goldwyn), Mellie suffered through quite the range of emotions by the season’s end. That being said, it will definitely be interesting in seeing how her story develops in the new season, and how her character will bounce back.

In an interview with Hollywood Life , Young discussed how her character will put herself back together in the coming season, especially after Fitz learned she was operating with Rowan Pope (Joe Morton).

“I can’t imagine her saying, ‘well I accept,’ ” she explained in the interview. “I hope ultimately that Mellie is president and Fitz is by her side and he loves her so much again and they’ve weathered that Olivia (Kerry Washington) storm, and now they’re together and it’s happiness,” Young added.

Although Young is hopeful that her character will mend her relationship with Fitz, and that Olivia would slowly disappear, that doesn’t seem likely to happen any time soon. With Olivia and Fitz getting back together in the White House in Season 4, it’s possible that their relationship will develop more in the season, and Young will see her character enduring some tough times.

Whatever ends of happening between Mellie, Fitz, and Olivia, the Scandal star went on to state that playing Mellie is a role she deeply cherishes. “Mellie is the gift of a lifetime,” she stated.

Young went on to add that part of what makes her role so great is the talented writing staff she gets to work with on a daily basis, and how they have the ability to keep her guessing on which direction they take her character.

“I never know what part I’ll serve in the narrative. I could be the good guy or be the bad guy… Bless our writing staff and Shonda Rhimes, they make really complicated humans.”

Meanwhile, as Scandal prepares for the upcoming season, a former guest star has officially been upgraded to a regular cast member on the hit show. According to Christian Today , Cornelius Smith Jr. has been granted the promotion and will be featured more in the new season in his role as Marcus Walker.

The Season 5 premiere of Scandal is set to hit the small screens on September 24 on ABC.
