Samsung Galaxy Note Somehow Manages To Sell 5 Million Worldwide

The Samsung Galaxy Note may not be all that much of a hit in the opinions of tech reviewers, but sales of the phone-tablet hybrid suggest that it might be a hit with consumers.

According to Samsung, the Galaxy Note has managed to sell 5 million units worldwide since it launched some five months ago. To clarify, that figure is 5 million units sold , not shipped–the original statement released by Samsung earlier today suggested otherwise.

This figure is up quite a bit from the 2 million Samsung Galaxy Notes sold that the company reported earlier this month, but that likely has to do with the fact that the Samsung Galaxy Note didn’t make it to the United States until February 19 of this year.

To say that it’s a surprise that the Samsung Galaxy Note managed to rake in such a respectable sales number is a bit of an understatement. Samsung’s phone-tablet hybrid may sport a sleek 5.3-inch OLED display, but the device was getting a lot of heat for being too big for a phone, and too small for a tablet.

The Samsung Galaxy Note is just about the right size to fit in your pocket, provided you’re not wearing tight jeans, but the phone-tablet’s relatively bulky size was considered to be only appealing to a niche market. That, and the fact that the phone just about requires two hands to operate–the phone comes with a “S Pen” stylus to take advantage of touch screen controls–made the Samsung Galaxy Note seem like a hard sell.

The significant jump in Samsung Galaxy Note sales from earlier on the month is also a bit suspicious, so we’ll just have to take Samsung at their word.
