The U.S. military apparently located weapons of mass destruction stockpiles in Iraq in the 2004 to 2009 time frame.
This WMD revelation, as chronicled by The New York Times , appears to challenge the accepted belief that there were no WMD in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq and the whole “Bush lied, people died” mantra.
Over the years, there have been scattered, unconfirmed reports of Iraq WMD found by U.S. operatives and also claims that the weapons were transported to Syria in the run-up to the 2003 Iraq war. Both the Clinton and Bush administrations maintained that Saddam had WMD.
One of the mysteries of the Bush White House is why it never seemed to respond to its many critics who assailed the-then president over the whole WMD debacle.
The new information about legacy chemical weapons was published by The New York Times , a news outlet which was no friend to the Bush administration.
“The United States recovered thousands of old chemical weapons in Iraq from 2004 to 2009 and destroyed almost all of them in secret and via open-air detonation, according to a written summary of its activities prepared by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons… [The report] included a table disclosing limited details on 95 separate recoveries and destructions of chemical warheads, shells or aviation bombs, for a total of 4,530 munitions… The weapons destroyed through early 2009, the newly released report said, included some that contained chemical agents, others that were corroded and degraded, and some that appeared to have been previously demilitarized but that the United States destroyed ‘to err on the side of safety and security’ … All were legacy items from Iraq’s chemical weapons program in the 1980s and early 1990s.”
A previous report in the Times similarly claimed that “From 2004 to 2011, American and American-trained Iraqi troops repeatedly encountered, and on at least six occasions were wounded by, chemical weapons remaining from years earlier in Saddam Hussein’s rule,” which encompassed a stockpile of about 5,000 WMD.
The Bush administration at the time kept these kind of WMD findings under wraps and out of the media because it wanted to protect our troops and didn’t want to alert Iraqi insurgents about such weapons stashed at Saddam’s facilities, Townhall claims .
As previously reported by the Inquisitr , the ISIS terrorist army apparently has gained access to Saddam’s old WMD arsenal and may have deployed chemical weapons against the Kurds. ISIS may also have gotten its hands on nuclear components, according to some ominous reports.
George W. Bush pushed for the Iraq War in part to prevent terrorist groups from seizing WMD materials.
