Following the death of mathematician John Nash and his wife Alicia Nash, A Beautiful Mind actor Russell Crowe was “ stunned .” He took to Twitter to post a sentimental tweet as tribute to the Nobel laureate who was the subject of the 2001 film and his late wife.

Crowe wrote, “My heart goes out to John & Alicia & family. An amazing partnership. Beautiful minds, beautiful hearts.”

John, 86, and Alicia, 82, were killed in a violent car crash last Saturday on the New Jersey Turnpike. According to State Police Sgt. Gregory Williams, the couple were riding in a taxi heading south in the left lane of the turnpike when the driver lost control. He tried to pass a Chrysler in the center lane but ended up crashing into a guard rail near Interchange 8A in Monroe Township.

William also discovered that John and Alicia didn’t appear to have been wearing any seatbelts, which is why they were ejected from the car. The crash was reported at 4:30 PM, and the two were pronounced dead at the scene in less than an hour at 5:18 PM.

The driver, on the other hand, survived the crash and was flown to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. Identified as Tark Girgis, 46 years of age, the driver suffered non-life threatening injuries. The Chrysler also crashed into the guard rail. A passenger of that car was treated for neck pain.

Reports also reveal that the couple were returning from Norway. Last Tuesday, John and his wife went to the country to receive the Abel Prize for Mathematics from King Harald V. He and longtime colleague Louis Nirenberg were recognized for their work on nonlinear partial differential equations.

John is noted for being one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20 th century. He is highly-celebrated for his work on “game theory” which uses mathematical theories to predict the outcome of competitions. In 1995, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics which he shared with his two colleagues and fellow game theorists John Harsanyi and Reinhard Selten.

His work is widely-adopted in various fields such as business and diplomacy but his career as a mathematician has long been derailed by schizophrenia. He suffered delusions, hallucinations and paranoia.

John struggled for nearly 25 years and even divorced Alicia . Fortunately, his condition improved in the 1980s and they remarried in 2001.
