In a torrent of media coverage over the death of Robin Williams, in which several reporters and news outlets have already apologized for inappropriate remarks or controversial journalistic methods, conservative radio talk show personality Rush Limbaugh weighed in today with his own unique viewpoint on the heartbreaking suicide of the beloved but troubled star.
In the view of Rush Limbaugh, the “political leftist” views of Robin Williams were the underlying factor that caused the comedian to take his own life.
Robin Williams was a lifelong liberal Democrat, and he contributed thousands to such prominent Democratic politicians as Nancy Pelosi, Al Franken and Barbara Boxer.
“He had everything, everything that you would think would make you happy. But it didn’t,” Limbaugh said on his August 12 radio broadcast . “Now, what is the Left’s worldview in general? What is it? If you had to attach not a philosophy but an attitude to a leftist worldview, it’s one of pessimism and darkness, sadness. They’re never happy, are they? They’re always angry about something. No matter what they get, they’re always angry.”
Limbaugh then referred to a story on the Fox News site which alleged that Robin Williams became depressed by the cancellation of his latest TV series, The Crazy Ones , and by the fact that financial difficulties resulting from two costly divorce settlements forced him to take film roles that he would otherwise refuse.
“They are animated in large part by the false promises of America, because the promises of America are not for everyone, as we see each and every day,” Limbaugh said, citing the Fox News story. “Do you know, it says right here, that the real reasons that Robin Williams killed himself are he was embarrassed at having to take television roles after a sterling movie career. He had it all, but he had nothing. He made everybody else laugh but was miserable inside. I mean, it fits a certain picture, or a certain image that the Left has. Talk about low expectations and general unhappiness and so forth.”
According to Limbaugh, this “general unhappiness” experienced by the Fisher King star was the result not of clinical depression, but of “leftist” politics.
Also on the broadcast, Limbaugh implied that Robin Williams took his own life in order to gain media attention, saying that media coverage was somehow portraying Robin Williams suicide as an act of “heroism.”
“They’re making such heroism out of this that I hope it doesn’t inspire a lot of copycats by people seeking the same kind of fame,” Rush Limbaugh opined. “To kill yourself is one way to get the media to spend a lot of time talking about you, if you want to be talked about.”
