Robert Pattinson may be criticized for his tendency to take on smaller film roles following his success as Edward Cullen in the highly popular Twilight film franchise, but Pattinson is speaking out in defense of his new film projects by insisting that he never wanted to be famous in the first place.
In a new interview with Cosmopolitan Germany for the magazine’s October issue, Pattinson opens up about the “hype” surrounding Twilight after its initial release, admitting that the constant attention surrounding his private life made him want to go into hiding.
When asked how he didn’t “go crazy from the hysteria that came with Twilight ,” Pattinson admits he never intended to become famous by starring in the series, Gossip Cop reports.
“Maybe because I never wanted to become famous…The more famous I became, the more I wanted to hide out. The hype was irritating to me.”
While Pattinson may have been bothered by the attention surrounding the film’s international success, the actor admits that things have gotten “a lot better” in regard to Twilight ‘s fan base.
“It’s a lot better now,” Pattinson explains. “The Twilight fans got older, and it’s more relaxed now.”
When asked to recall the moment he realized he was a celebrity, Pattinson explains that “six months before the second Twilight movie came out,” he was invited to a trendy L.A. club.
“The doorman just looked at me and said, ‘It’s OK, you can go in,’” he reveals, “I was like, ‘What?’ Up until then I never was let into clubs that easily.”
Despite having access to the various perks of being a world-renowned movie star, Pattinson admits that there can be a downside to fame.
“I’m not the type who likes to draw attention to myself, but I can’t really walk around without getting recognized. If people want to say a quick ‘hello,’ that’s fine, but every second person wants to take a selfie. That means I always have to be in a good mood.”
While Pattinson may have some resentment towards the film that shot him to international super stardom, the actor reveals in an interview with Elle France, via Cambio , that he’d be interested in doing another Twilight film.
When asked if he would be open to doing another Twilight film, Pattinson simply replies, “Why not!” before calling the film a “happy accident.”
“There has been what I call ‘the happy accident’ that was Twilight , which allowed me to meet David Cronenberg. Working with him opened me up to new opportunities.”
As for whether or not Pattinson was fearful of losing some of his Twilight fan base by taking on smaller movie roles, the actor explains, “On the contrary, I think my name on a poster rallies my fan base.”
“I hope to awake their curiosity and show them a different vision of cinema. Don’t forget that they grow up too. And they didn’t want to see all their lives Robert Pattinson playing a vampire. We tend to devalue the fans. It’s a mistake. The fan is an audience member like the others.”
