Do you think that the Washington Redskins need a name change? Well, you shouldn’t expect it anytime soon. Owner Dan Snyder said (for the two thousandth time) that he will not be changing the team’s name.
Snyder recently penned a letter to ticket holders saying that he will not “ignore our 81 year history.”
Snyder writes : “I respect the opinions of those who disagree… I want them to know that I do hear them, and I will continue to listen and learn. But we cannot ignore our 81 year history, or the strong feelings most of our fans as well as Native Americans throughout the country.”
The Washington Redskins have been under pressure lately to change their name to something a little less offensive. The team is even planning to meet with a members of an Indian tribe sometime next month. Of course, it’s unclear if Snyder and the Redskins organization will actually listen to what the Oneida Indian Nation .
Snyder writes in his letter that a recent poll showed that only 10% of Native Americans found the name to be offensive.
Snyder writes : “That tradition — the song, the cheer — it mattered so much to me as a child, and I know it matters to every other Redskins fan in the D.C. area and across the nation… Our past isn’t just where we came from — it’s who we are… When I consider the Washington Redskins name, I think of what it stands for. I think of the Washington Redskins traditions and pride I want to share with my three children, just as my father shared with me — and just as you have shared with your family and friends.”
