Randy Travis was discharged from The Heart Hospital in Texas. The 54-year-old country singer was released to a rehabilitation facility, where he will complete physical therapy. Travis is recovering from a stroke.
Travis’ doctors blame the stroke on complications from heart problems. He was initially hospitalized with congestive heart failure. Once admitted, Travis was placed on life support for two days. While he was on life support, he suffered a stroke.
As reported by CNN, Travis was initially admitted to Baylor Medical Center , and later transferred to The Heart Hospital.
Doctors explain that Travis’ heart condition began with a virus that weakened the heart muscles. As the muscles weaken, the heartbeat slows. In more severe cases, the heart may stop beating completely.
Travis’ fiance Mary Davis released a statement thanking his “fans and friends for [their] continued prayers and support as Randy continues on the road to recovery.”
Randy Travis’ physical therapy will focus on regaining strength and coordination.
As reported by Biography.com, Travis is well-known for introducing younger crowds to the sound of traditional country music . In 1986, his unique style carried his album, Storms of Life, to number one on the charts.
His success led to an invitation to join the Grand Ole Opry in 1986.
Travis continued releasing albums throughout the 1990s, to the delight of millions of fans. During the same time, Travis became interested in acting. He appeared in numerous television programs and films, including Touched By an Angel, and The Million Dollar Kid.
Following his tremendous success in the 1990s, Travis had several downfalls in the last two years.
In August 2012 Travis was arrested in Texas for driving while intoxicated. Travis allegedly drove off the side of the road and fell asleep in his car. He reportedly resisted arrest, which led to additional criminal charges.
Randy Travis’ medical problems, which began in July, are not over. However, he has reportedly made great strides in his recovery.
