Randy Moss is done with the San Francisco 49ers, a sources close to the team has said.
The 49ers apparently want to “steer clear” of the veteran wide receiver and do not plan on re-signing him for the 2013 season, Pro Football Talk reported.
Those who followed the 49ers last season would not be surprised to see Randy Moss on the way out. Though the veteran reportedly played an important role in the locker room and with mentoring the team’s younger receivers, he caught only 28 passes in the regular season and seven in the playoffs.
Moss actually made headlines more for his statements off the field than he did his play on the field. During Super Bowl media day he declared himself the best wide receiver of all time , and during the playoffs he said that the 49ers were not utilizing him to the best of his abilities.
Randy Moss also seemed to confirm the split with the 49ers, Fox Sports noted. On Saturday he tweeted: “Wished we could’ve finished the job!!thanks for the opportunity an good luck in the future 9ers”
It’s not clear if Randy Moss will continue playing in 2013 or choose retirement, Yahoo! Sports reported. He already sat out the 2011 season before signing with the 49ers as a free agent a year ago. Moss is set to become a free agent again on March 12.
If he does retire, Randy Moss will be remembered as one of the all-time great wide receivers in the game. He ranks No. 3 all time in receiving hards with 15,292 and No. 2 in touchdowns with 156.
