Rachel Salters, 46, was arrested Wednesday night after she allegedly beat a young boy with a sack of potatoes.

WESH Orlando reports that the Florida woman repeatedly hit the 12-year-old child with a sack of potatoes after he asked her a question about dinner.

The child later told the deputies that, shortly after he asked about dinner, Salters grabbed the sack of potatoes and started swinging it at him. He quickly ran into the bathroom and locked himself inside in order to escape the attack.

Rachel, apparently, did not allow that to stop her. She allegedly kicked the bathroom door in and hit the boy on his head several times with the bag of potatoes.

According to the deputies, Salters even threw the potatoes at him directly — pummeling the child with them individually.

While the police investigated the scene, the deputies ordered Salters not to touch anything while they took photographs of the scene. However, WESH Orlando reports that she allegedly moved multiple potatoes from the scene.

A December, 2014, report confirmed that Florida topped the national list of child abuse and neglect cases. The report was based on an 8-month investigation that focused on compiling a state-by-state comparison.

The Department of Children and Families (DCF) released a statement to FOX 35 in reference to plans made by Mike Carroll, the department’s Interim Secretary.

“DCF’s top priority is keeping children safe and thus eliminating preventable child fatalities. Secretary Carroll is committed to transparency in reporting all child fatalities suspected of abuse or neglect to the public. The department prioritizes the collection of data in order to improve our child welfare practice and better protect children and assist at-risk families. The department’s emphasis on data collection was key in our ability to provide comprehensive data to the Associated Press.”

The 12-year-old boy was taken into custody temporarily by the Department of Children and Families. Rachel Salters has been charged with evidence tampering and principal to child abuse, and booked into the Volusia County jail on Thursday.
