A former pro snowboarder has revealed his unique way of getting closer to nature, detailing an off-the-grid home he fashioned stone-by-stone with his own hands.
Mike Basich built the unique home, which measures just 225-square-feet, in the midst of 40 acres he owns near Truckee, California. As Trending Now relates, Basich built the home from the ground up, using only his own effort to fashion the off-the-grid cabin . The stonework took him nearly two and a half years, though the full project required much more time.
“It took me five years — two and half years to do all the rock work. I think I moved about 175 ton of rock,” he noted.

The home has no internet access, indoor plumbing, or traditional electricity, Basich told Seeker Stories . Water is fed to the home by two creeks located on the property, and an overhead loft provides a unique sleeping area.
Basich’s off-the-grid cabin is hardly the first home he has ever owned. A snowboarding pioneer who at one time was making $170,000 yearly, he long ago purchased a 4,000-square-foot house as he chased “the American dream,” by his own admission. Basich notes that a large home and fancy car “didn’t do anything different” for him, other than requiring more of his time. As sponsors changed, Basich left the competitive circuit over 15-years-ago, finding an outlet in photography.

“I like to think of it as getting back to the basics of humanity,” Basich says of the home. “I like feeling connected to the earth more than I could with a 4,000-square-foot house.”
The mountaintop cabin also features a hot tub, and takes advantage of the sun for some heating, in addition to a reclaimed woodstove. The property boasts a single-rider chairlift that Basich uses when snowboarding outside his off-the-grid home, as Make: reports.
Basich’s home is constructed in the shape of a pentagon, and is based on the golden ratio, a measurement said to make a space “feel more fit to the body.” On his birthday, several stars on the windows align to cast a shadow on the center of the floor, making the home far more personal for Basich.

Though Basich feels connected to nature, his style of living would actually be outlawed in some states. As the Inquisitr has previously reported, one municipality in the state of Florida recently outlawed off-the-grid living , while similar homes have faced scrutiny in Texas.
