Andrew McCutchen proposed to his girlfriend of four years Maria Hanslovan on The Ellen DeGeneres Show .
The Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder and National League MVP popped the question on the Wednesday broadcast.
In case there was any doubt, she said yes.
McCutchen told Hanslovan after she joined him on the stage that his proposal on TV wasn’t a publicity stunt. “I didn’t do any of this for the publicity, I didn’t do any of this for the recognition. I did this to show you that if I could tell the whole world how much I love you, I would do that.”
When McCutchen first sat down next to Ellen, she asked him a question that was obviously part of the set up about whether he was dating anyone. The Pirates star responded that his girlfriend Maria was “in the stands,” using baseball terminology (rather than “in the audience”), but close enough.
Before proposing, McCutchen introduced and narrated a heartfelt video about their relationship. The video speaks for itself (see embed above), although it contains an interesting footnote about why “Cutch” always tips his batting helmet when he crosses home plate.
In the 2013 MLB season, McCutchen led the Pirates to their first post-season appearance since 1992. In the regular season, he batted.317 with 21 home runs, 84 RBI, and 28 stolen bases. McCutchen made his MLB debut with the Pirates in 2009. His career numbers so far include a.296 batting average with 814 hits, 103 home runs, and 379 RBI.
With their engagement official, Ellen presented Hanslovan with roses and gave McCutchen a top hat bearing the Pirates logo.
Maria Hanslovan is a 2011 graduate of Slippery Rock University with a bachelor of science in forensic chemistry.
