Pierce Brosnan’s daughter married her longtime boyfriend in a private ceremony two weeks before she died of ovarian cancer — the same disease that killed her mother 22 years ago.
Brosnan walked his 41-year-old daughter Charlotte down the aisle when she married Alex Smith on June 14 . Her 15-year-old daughter, Isabella, acted as a bridesmaid.
A wedding attendee said, “It was the most moving day of my life. It wasn’t a day to be sad. Alex and Pierce were smiling broadly.”
Pierce Brosnan married Charlotte’s mother, Australian actress Cassandra Harris, in 1980. After Charlotte’s father Dermot Harris died in 1986, Brosnan adopted her and her brother Christopher, and they took his last name.
A year after her ex-husband died, Cassandra Harris became seriously ill while filming The Deceivers in India. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and died of the disease in 1991 at 43. Brosnan said that Harris had “the most amazing energy and outlook on life” and he saw it “reflected, from time to time” in his children.
Brosnan also said that Harris always wanted him to play James Bond, a role he finally received in 1995 for GoldenEye , the seventeenth film in the Bond series. He played Bond for three more movies: Tomorrow Never Dies , The World Is Not Enough , and Die Another Day.
Charlotte Brosnan died in London on June 28 after a three-year battle with ovarian cancer . In addition to daughter Isabella and husband Alex, she leaves behind a son, 8-year-old Lucas. Pierce Brosnan was filming the spy thriller November Man in Serbia when his daughter made a turn for the worse, and he left the set to be by her side. He flew back to Belgrade Tuesday, and a source close to the actor said that he was “beside himself, having to deal with this kind of loss again,” but was “trying to be what comfort he can to her family.”
