Prairie Farms has debuted Peeps-flavored milk just in time for spring and the Easter season. The manufacturer dubbed the marshmallow milk as “twice the Easter fun.” This is big news, since Peeps opened its first retail store in Maryland . Prairie Farms will offer Chocolate Marshmallow, Marshmallow, and reduced-fat Easter Egg Nog at local grocery stores across the nation.
So what does Peeps-flavored milk really taste like? This product was already released to consumers in the Midwest earlier this week. Today In St. Louis producer Cassidy Moody searched high and low for the Chocolate Marshmallow flavor on Wednesday morning.
Moody tweeted, “Chocolate #Peepsmilk tastes pretty good, actually.” He even shared a photo of the Peeps-flavored milk he purchased from the grocery store.
How does the Chocolate Marshmallow stack up to regular chocolate milk? USA Today reported that the Peeps-flavored milk has more than three times the amount of sugar then a regular serving of Prairie Farms whole milk. That means it has 37 grams of sugar per cup, according to the source. A serving of whole milk only contains 11 grams of sugar per cup.
Peeps-flavored milk not only contains more sugar, but it also has twice as much sodium. The Chocolate Marshmallow has 320 mg per cup, compared to 120 mg per cup for whole milk. Both types of these milk products contain 8 grams of protein.
Time magazine reported about the flavors of the popular Peeps candies. Contributor Olivia B. Waxman noted that the marshmallows “taste like plain sugar.”
According to a press release for the new drinks, Peeps-flavored milk is 100 percent milk mixed with “premium ingredients.” The ingredients on the milk cartons hint to “natural and artificial flavors,” according to the Los Angeles Times .
“If you look at the ingredients listed for yellow Peeps, there’s sugar, corn syrup, gelatin, yellow #5, potassium sorbate, natural flavors and carnauba wax.”
As for the Egg Nog flavor, it remains a mystery at the moment. It does contain “5 grams of protein and 15 percent of the daily value of calcium, so go ahead and indulge,” according to the press release.
Rebecca Leinenbach, the vice president of marketing and communications of Prairie Farms, explained the incredibly sweet taste behind these milk products.
“We worked with Just Born Quality Confections, manufacturer of Peeps candies, to develop custom flavor formulations for the milk. There aren’t any Peeps marshmallows in the milk but the milk flavors do taste similar to Peeps marshmallow candy counterparts.”
Some consumers still aren’t convinced enough to try out this marshmallow milk. It’s already received some mixed reactions across social media. Still, there are some people who would love to try out the new Peeps-flavored milk.
