Paula Abdul is reconnecting with her Jewish roots at the moment as she spends some time touring the Holy Land of Israel. She is even planning a belated Bat Mitzvah which is usually given to Jewish girls at the age of 12 to signify entry to adulthood.

Abdul (51) spoke to the The Associated Press (AP) about her trip to Israel: “Beyond being Jewish, I’ve always found myself to be very much in tune with spirituality. I feel very grateful coming to Israel now, where as a woman I know who I am a lot more than even 10 years ago.”

During her trip to Israel, Paula Abdul has been touring holy sites and museums and was even hosted by Israel’s President Shimon Peres. Paula said that she was thrilled to be able to experience Israel at her own pace without the deadlines she has when touring and performing at concerts.

She spoke about what a special trip to Israel she had: “I’ve traveled the world touring and things like that but I don’t get the chance to see much of wherever I’m at. The most magnificent trip I’ve ever taken… magical and emotional.”

Paula Abdul also spoke during her interview about the new dance phenomenon “twerking” which she said she is no fan of: “ Twerking has been around for many, many years. I think when girls dance, they should be girls. I don’t find it the most attractive kind of dance. My Chihuahua can twerk and stick her tongue out at the same time too,” she said.

Abdul has had a long career as a singer-songwriter, choreographer, dancer and television personality. She has been married twice. Her first marriage to Emilio Estevez lasted just two years; they were divorced in 1994.

In 1996 Abdul married clothing designer Brad Beckerman. That marriage also lasted two years and they divorced in 1998, citing irreconcilable differences.

Abdul announced in 2007 that she had begun dating J.T. Torregiani, a restaurant owner 12 years her junior, That relationship lasted a year.

So, Paula Abdul has not exactly been “lucky in love.” Hopefully her spiritual awakening in Israel will set her on course for a more fulfilling future.
