Paul McCartney visited Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley, this weekend, and decided to leave a present by the rock icon’s grave whilst there – a guitar pick .
McCartney was updating his Twitter account throughout his visit to the Memphis landmark, but the former Beatle’s most touching moment came when he visited the grave of Presley. McCartney then decided to leave a plectrum on his grave, telling his fans on Twitter that it was “so Elvis can play in heaven,” before adding the caption, “Paying Respects #OutThere at #Graceland.”
It was reportedly McCartney’s first visit to Graceland since The Beatles met Presley for a few hours in Los Angeles in 1965. McCartney took the time to hold one of the singer’s guitars, adding the caption, “Guitar Man! at #Graceland #OutThere.”
McCartney was in Memphis to play a show as part of his Out There tour, which is currently on its North American leg after opening in Brazil this week. It then move on to Poland, Italy, Austria, and Canada. McCartney has used this tour to play a number of songs that he hasn’t performed live before, which has included, “Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite” and “All Together Now.”
Most recently McCartney has been at the forefront of a campaign to help get Pussy Riot singers, Maria Alekhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, released for prison after they held a concert in a Moscow Cathedral.
McCartney even wrote a letter to a Russian judge , stating, “My personal belief is that further incarceration for Maria will be harmful for her and the situation as a whole, which, of course, is being watched by people all over the world.”
He then added, “I have had a long relationship with the Russian people, and with this in mind, I am making the following request in a spirit of friendship for my many Russian acquaintances who, like me, believe in treating people — all people, with compassion and kindness.”
