One Direction’s Liam Payne took to Twitter on Friday to lash out at fans who criticized his candid Attitude Magazine interview, saying that he thought “people appreciated honesty these days.”

Liam’s entire tweets can be read below.

As reported by the Inquisitr , Liam Payne has been the target of homophobia accusations lately. The accusations began after he allegedly made a homophobic remark at a One Direction concert in Ohio last month.

“This is my favorite song off the last album, and it is about trying to find that number one woman of your life, which none of you can relate to, ’cause most of you are girls. Except for the boys in here, you know what I’m talking about.”

Fans criticized the One Direction heartthrob anew when he revealed, in the interview, his annoyance at the rumors claiming his One Direction bandmates — Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles — are lovers. Liam also said that the rainbow flags flying at One Direction concerts were only there because of the “Louis and Harry thing.”

“[W]hen the law [on gay marriage] changed in the U.S. there were loads of rainbow flags flying at our shows, but I think that was mainly because people think of the Louis and Harry thing, which is absolutely nuts and drives me insane.”

Part of what stoked the criticisms is probably the fact that Attitude Magazine ‘s target demographic includes the gay community. There are some One Direction fans who claimed Liam Payne only agreed to do the interview as a means of damage control against the accusations of homophobia being heaped on him.

Be that as it may, Payne did state clearly in the interview his thoughts on gay marriage.

“It’s strange to me that countries are still refusing to pass the [gay marriage] law. You can’t live in the past, you have to move with the times.”

The One Direction singer revealed that he’ll be featured in an exclusive interview and photo-shoot with Attitude Magazine for October when he tweeted the covers on Thursday. The cover blurb reads, “On His Wild Nights, Gay Rights, and Why Homophobia Should Be a Thing of the Past.” As reported by Daily Mail, Liam was named by Attitude Magazine as “The Sexiest Man Alive” and is the first One Direction member to earn the honor.

In the interview, Liam Payne also opened up about having gone through a bad drinking stage, and that it actually helped him deal with the pressures of being in the spotlight as a member of One Direction.

One Direction is currently on tour and has recently announced that a fifth album is in the works.
