An Ohio Turnpike crash left one injured and two dead on Thanksgiving. Authorities said 24-year-old Andrew D. Gans, of Kent, Ohio, suffered non life-threatening injuries. However, two people were killed when he crashed into their van at speeds close to 125 mph.
Beginning at approximately 7 pm on November 28, dispatchers received numerous calls from drivers on the Ohio Turnpike. They reported a 2013 Infinity traveling at a high rate of speed. Although the speed limit is 70 mph, Gans was reportedly maintaining a steady pace of 125 to 150 mph as he weaved in and out of traffic.
Troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol attempted to catch up with Gans before he caused an accident. Unfortunately, before they could reach him, he crashed into a 2009 Chrysler Town & Country.
As reported by ABC News , Gans escaped his vehicle moments before it burst into flames. He was detained and transported to Saint Vincent’s Medical Center in Toledo with minor injuries. Authorities said Gans is currently listed in fair condition. In addition to treatment for his injuries, he will undergo a psychiatric evaluation .
Authorities said Gans was cited in the fatal crash and charged with two counts of vehicular homicide. Although toxicology results are not available, troopers said they believe he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
13 ABC News reports the victims were identified as Wilbur L. and Margaret A. McCoy, both age 77. The Toledo couple was on their way home from a Thanksgiving celebration.
The Ohio Turnpike crash left motorists stranded for hours. With temperatures in the low 20s, several people had mechanical issues , including dead batteries.
Authorities report all lanes of the Ohio Turnpike are now clear. It is unknown whether Gans will face further charges in the crash. However, detectives are discussing the possibility with prosecutors.
