An off-duty police officer fatally shot a man Wednesday, according to the Chicago Sun Times , during a domestic incident in the 6200-block of Scott Street, in Rosemont, Illinois.
The victim of the shooting, Joseph Caffarello, 31, made national headlines when he was caught sleeping on the job as an Illinois Tollway garage supervisor. According to The Huffington Post , he had been fired three times.
The shooting occurred around noon, just south of Granville Avenue. Gary Mack, a spokesman for the Rosemont village area said the shooting was a “domestic incident” that occurred in the street.
The officer-involved shooting happened amidst the controversial release of the extended video of the fatal shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice by Cleveland Police in November.
According to ABC7 , the off-duty officer involved in the shooting is Caffarello’s brother-in-law , and has been on the job for four years. He has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the Illinois State Police.
Though allegedly not in the mob himself, Caffarello had family ties within the organization. He once wrote that his Uncle, the late mob street-tax collector Anthony “Jeep” Daddino, had been like a father to him.
According to court records, Daddino also worked for the late, feared mob killer, Frank “The German” Schweihs.
After Daddino died from cancer, Caffarello asked the tollway for bereavement leave, which is reserved for the death of immediate family members such as children or parents.
In a letter to tollway officials Caffarello wrote, “I consider my uncle immediate family due to the fact that he raised me from a baby,” and goes on to say his Uncle was he closest thing he had to a father.
Cafarello’s sensational death is only the second this year in the small northwest Chicago suburb. Until Friday, the community had not seen a murder in over a decade.
In what police have said is an unrelated case, a 14-year-old Des Plaines student was killed Friday in what is believed to be a gang-related murder.
